ONDO STATE MOVES TOWARD SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE WITH NEW FINANCING STRATEGY VALIDATION
The Ondo State Government has reiterated the need for sacrifice, dedication, and commitment among health workers to ensure quality healthcare delivery across the state. This was highlighted by Banji Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health, during the Expanded Health Financing Technical Working Group meeting and validation of the Ondo State Health Financing Policy and Strategy held in Akure. Represented by Simidele Odimayo, he affirmed the government’s resolve to support improvements in the health sector and urged stakeholders to adopt vital lessons that will advance healthcare delivery.
In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Ayodele Adiji, described the gathering as a major milestone in strengthening the state’s health system. He emphasized that healthcare financing remains the backbone of effective service delivery, noting that sustainable, evidence-driven frameworks are essential to achieving universal health coverage and protecting citizens from financial hardship.

Dr. Adiji noted that the review process provides a strategic opportunity to evaluate past progress, identify gaps, and align with emerging innovations and best practices. He explained that the expanded Technical Working Group reflects intentional inclusiveness and multi-sectoral collaboration, ensuring practical and impactful policy outcomes. He encouraged stakeholders to engage with openness and accountability while working in line with the OUR EASE Agenda of the state government.

Delivering a goodwill message, the State Lead of Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Olamide Ayedun, noted that CHAI—supported by funding from Global Affairs Canada—has provided technical assistance for developing the State Health Financing Policy and Strategy. He explained that the document aligns with national reforms and provides evidence-based direction for government, partners, civil society, and the private sector toward achieving universal health coverage by 2030.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Ondo State Drug and Health Commodities Management Agency, Olugbenga Lasekan, stressed the importance of synergy among stakeholders to strengthen the health system.

The project consultant, Ibirongbe Demilade, noted that the meeting reviewed the current state of healthcare financing, highlighted key challenges, and proposed strategic measures for improvement. He urged all participants to ensure the process results in tangible progress for healthcare outcomes in the state.
Presenting the meeting's objectives, the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Richard Adesoji, explained that the session aimed to review progress made so far, validate the State Health Financing Policy and Strategy, and refine strategic directions to guide Ondo State’s health financing framework moving forward.
