Improving Health Outcomes

The Department of Planning, Research and Statistics (PR&S) serves as the central engine room of the Ondo State Ministry of Health, providing the technical backbone for policy formulation, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, and health sector research. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the Ministry’s programs and initiatives are not only well-coordinated but also evidence-based, sustainable, and aligned with national and international health goals.

At its core, the PR&S Department is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of the State’s health sector strategic and operational plans. This involves translating the vision and mission of the Ministry into measurable goals, objectives, and targets that guide the delivery of quality healthcare services across the state. By setting clear performance benchmarks and developing sector-wide plans, the department ensures that health programs remain focused, efficient, and responsive to the needs of the population.

A key responsibility of the Department is in research and data management. The department oversees the generation, collation, and analysis of health data from facilities and programs across the state. This process strengthens the State Health Information Management System (SHMIS) and ensures that accurate and timely information is available to support decision-making. By conducting surveys, operational research, and statistical reviews, the Department provides critical evidence for designing interventions, assessing program effectiveness, and identifying emerging health challenges.

The Department also takes charge of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of health sector activities. It tracks progress on policies, projects, and programs, ensuring accountability and effective use of resources. Through regular field visits, performance reviews, and impact assessments, the PR&S Department provides feedback that enables continuous improvement in service delivery.

In addition, the Department serves as the Ministry’s focal point for partnerships and collaborations with development partners, donor agencies, and research institutions. It coordinates joint reviews, facilitates health sector performance dialogues, and ensures that external support aligns with the State’s priorities and frameworks.

The Department of Planning, Research and Statistics is equally instrumental in the preparation of the Ministry’s annual budgets and reports. It ensures that resource allocation is based on evidence and that funds are channeled towards high-impact and cost-effective health programs. By producing comprehensive statistical publications, policy briefs, and performance reports, the Department provides stakeholders with valuable insights into the health sector’s performance.

Ultimately, the Department stands as the Ministry’s hub of innovation, accountability, and policy direction. By leveraging planning, rigorous research, and reliable statistics, the PRS Department drives the sustainable transformation of the health sector in Ondo State, with the overarching goal of achieving universal access to quality, equitable, and affordable healthcare for all citizens.
