AIYEDATIWA FLAGS OFF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES, COMMISSIONS 10 HIGH-TECH AMBULANCES
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has commissioned 10 new ambulances to strengthen pre-hospital care, improve emergency response, and enhance overall healthcare efficiency in the state. Speaking at the official flag-off of the Ondo State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (SEMSAS) in Akure, he described the initiative as a major milestone in transforming healthcare delivery.
He explained that SEMSAS is part of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System aimed at improving healthcare access, ensuring timely emergency response, and safeguarding lives across communities. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Olaide Adelami, the governor noted that emergencies such as road accidents, medical crises, and obstetric complications occur daily, and many lives are lost due to delayed assistance.

“In line with our ‘OUR EASE’ development agenda, our administration has resolved to address these challenges and prevent avoidable deaths,” he said. He added that under SEMSAS, both transportation to health facilities and treatment of medical emergencies will be free for the first 48 hours, funded by the Federal Ministry of Health through NEMSAS.
The governor announced the reactivation of the State Emergency Call Center, now equipped with multi-million-naira communication gadgets to ensure quick response. The 24/7 dispatch centre will receive emergency calls and deploy ambulances promptly. He also noted that over 100 frontline responders have been trained, with continuous training planned to improve modern emergency care skills.

Aiyedatiwa praised private hospitals and ambulance owners for partnering with the government, stressing their importance in achieving an efficient healthcare system. He also thanked the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System under the Federal Ministry of Health for onboarding the state and acknowledged health workers and partners for their support.
Highlighting achievements, he referenced the Orange Health Insurance Scheme, which has provided healthcare to 103,062 public servants and their dependents across public and private hospitals. The Abiyamo Scheme has supported over 53,700 pregnant women and children under five, covering premiums and enabling over 17,300 safe deliveries, including 4,813 Caesarean sections at no cost.
Under the Ilera-Loro Insurance Scheme, the government has enrolled 8,754 elderly persons, 712 widows, 2,479 people with disabilities, 340 sickle cell patients, 1,519 orphans, and 310 inmates, with premiums fully funded by the state. The governor thanked the Federal Government for its leadership and urged stakeholders to join efforts in building a healthier and safer Ondo State.
In her goodwill message, NEMSA DG Hajia Fatima Ciroma said the programme represents a bold national vision for a coordinated, reliable, and equitable emergency care system that delivers help with speed and compassion. She described SEMSAS as a lifeline that will reach every community, connect every patient to care, and save lives. She emphasized the need for an efficient emergency system capable of rapid response and highlighted the integration of SEMSAS with a strong communication network for seamless coordination from pick-up to hospital admission.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, described SEMSAS as a major step toward improving emergency care, reducing mortality, and ensuring prompt medical attention regardless of location or financial capacity. He praised the governor’s commitment and noted that SEMSAS includes a 24/7 call centre, pre-hospital services, and 48-hour free hospital care. He added that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s goal of universal emergency response.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, described the flag-off as a significant development, stressing that emergency response is everyone’s responsibility. He disclosed plans to expand the ambulance fleet, including three advanced life support units, five basic life support units, and 102 tricycle ambulances before year-end.
FRSC Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, praised the governor’s efforts, particularly improvements in road infrastructure. He noted that road crashes remain one of Nigeria’s leading causes of death and commended SEMSAS for reducing response times and saving lives. He highlighted FRSC’s 100 emergency points in the state and urged residents to dial 122 during emergencies, reaffirming FRSC’s commitment to supporting the initiative.
