On the commemoration of world blood donor day, a day earmarked for the celebration of blood donor worldwide, Ondo State commissioner from Health, Dr Banji Awolowo Ajaka has called for more blood donation from the public into the blood banks in the government facilities in the state.
The commissioner made this known while addressesing the press in his office on the occassion of the commemoration of the day which is themed; Give blood, Give Plasma, Share life, share often.
Dr Ajaka explained that a minimum of 1.8 million units of blood per year is needed to meet blood transfusion needs of the citizens every year but unfortunately only 10 percent of blood supply comes from donor everywhere which he said wasn't enough for patients.
He also stressed that donating blood was essential to help patients to survive surgeries, chronic illnesses and trauma injuries while noting that the expansion of the secondary facilities by the Governor of Ondo state, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had provided for more blood donation than never before.
The commissioner therefore called on the good people of the state to do more in donating blood to the bloodbanks available in the state.
Dr Ajaka promised that more awareness and sensitization programme would be put in place by the ministry concerning blood donation especially for people with too much blood in their system which he said could also lead to death.
