Tuberculosis and leprosy constitute serious causes of high morbidity and mortality, especially in association with the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) epidemic. The social stigma associated with these diseases further compounds the problem.

Concerning tuberculosis, Nigeria ranked 10th among the 22 high burden TB

countries of the world and 1st in Africa.  A total of 1, 528 TB cases were notified in Ondo State in 2012. It should be noted that TB burden is further compounded by the high prevalence in the country.

To tackle the issue of TB burden, the National TB & Leprosy Control Programme was established in 1988. The programme effectively took off in Ondo State in 1994. The Programme is managed by the State TBL Control officer at the State level and Local Government TBLS supervisor at the Local Government Level.

Programme Objectives

To reduce the prevalence of the TB and Leprosy to a level at which they no longer constitute public health problems.

To prevent and reduce the impairments associated with Leprosy as well as provide appropriate rehabilitation for persons affected by Leprosy.

Programme Targets

  1. To detect at least 70% of the estimated infectious cases
  2. To cure at least 85% of detected smear positive cases
