The department of Nursing Services is a professional supervisory department responsible for planning for effective and efficient nursing services and training in Ondo State. It also represents the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in Ondo State through the Ondo State Nursing and Midwifery Committee.


The Department co-ordinates Nursing Services in the state through quarterly meetings


of Nurse Managers in the state and local Government Health institutions to deliberate on issues affecting Nursing practice and proffer solutions to them.


It also co-ordinates Nursing Services in the state through quarterly meetings of the Ondo State Nursing and Midwifery Committee. This committee is charged with the responsibility of maintaining standard in Nursing education, practice, training and research. The committee is a statutory body of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in Ondo State which conducts pre-accreditation visits, inspection of training institutions, public, private hospitals, verification of Nursing License and investigation of professional malpractices, implementation of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria’s (Nursing Regulatory body) policies and activities in the state.

The Department supervises the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery Council regulations. Consultancy in all matters of Nursing in the state.


Summary of Achievements


  • The Department through the continuing Education unit has built the capacity of nurses and trained 898 nurses from 2010 till date.
  • The Department monitored and supervised sixty-five basic midwives on one year Mandatory Midwifery Service in Ondo State.


Clinical Nursing, Monitoring and Inspectorate Division


The division initiates, organizes and supervises clinical activities so as to ensure that quality nursing care is rendered to the public in all secondary health care facilities in the State. This is done through regular monitoring of nursing services rendered to patients in the State Specialists and General Hospitals with the goal of improving the standard of Nursing care and good nurse/patient relationship.


Specialty Training and Continuing Education Division


The division organizes workshops for nurses and midwives to upgrading their knowledge and skills in nursing education and practice in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. It co-ordinates the Mandatory Professional Development programme for Nurses in Ondo State. It also initiates specialty training programmes for Nurses as approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.


Public Health Nursing Services Division


The division is responsible for planning and implementing programmes on Public Health Nursing. It also monitors nursing services in the schools. It organizes workshops and seminars to update the knowledge of nurses working in school health services.
