Workshop for the Validation of a Costed Ondo State Strategic Health Development Plan II(2017 – 2021)

The Ondo State Ministry of Health led by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, organised a 4-day residential workshop for the validation of a costed Ondo State Strategic Health Development Plan (2017-2021) sponsored by UNICEF and SOML.

Recently, Ondo State Government rolled a policy document (Strategic Development & Policy Implementation Committee Report) which will guide the actions of government and key into the new Strategic Health Development Plan II when produced. The process of the Ondo State Strategic Health Development Plan II began early this year with the composition of the core team/Technical Working Group who are technocrats drawn from the Ministries, Department and Agency to drive the health sector. This was subsequently followed by interview conducted for the engagement of State Consultants, training of the consultants on the use of the framework.

The Formal inauguration and sensitization meeting of Technical Working Group was declared open by the Honorable Commissioner for Health on the 13th-14th September 2017 and the review and validation of the plan recently conducted.

The purpose of this Final Validation workshop is to produce document with its appropriate costing which will serve as the basis for collective ownership, adequate resource allocation, inter-sectoral collaboration, decentralisation, equity, harmonisation, alignment and mutual accountability in Ondo State. The validation involved all stakeholders in health including Directors & Deputy Directors of MOH, HMB, OSPHCDB, ODEMSA, ODSACA, Program Officers, Development Partners and CSOs.

Dr Taiye Oni, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, said that the State actually put pressure on the Federal Government to start the strategic health plan. He noted that the outcome of the plan would be incorporated into federal government’s plan. Dr Oni promised that the outcome of the workshop would be implemented rather than being put on the shelf, as being done to the last one. The permanent secretary also charged participants to put in their best because it would enable the state government to plan effectively towards providing quality healthcare services to the people. He enjoined all the participants to put in their best inother to have robust workshop and at the end of five years, be gracious for good health strategic plan for our dear State. Finally, he said that the Ministry has learnt a lot from the mistakes of the past and will not fall into them again.

Dr Dipo Durojaye, Director Planning, Research and Statistics MOH, said that it was another process of the development of the strategic health plan II which would dictate the exact things to do in the health sector in the next five years in the State. He said that the participants were taken away from Akure to reside in the serene environment in other to avoid distractions. Also, to do the costing of the plan and all the activities identified as means of achieving the objectives of the plan and to develop the monitoring and evaluation framework which would be used to measure the performance of what has been achieved in the 5 years period.

Dr Isaac Aladeniyi, Deputy Director PR&S, MOH, thanked the Almighty God for granting the priviledge to be alive to witness the development of the plan. He expressed his gratitude to the Governor of the State for providing the support. He thanked the HCH and the Permanent Secretary for their leadership role. Also thanked the Director, PR&S MOH who has been the chief convener of the plan. He thanked the Acting Secretary, HMB and Executive Secretary, OSPHCDB for providing all the necessary support and the Directors, Deputy Directors and Program Officers of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies for honoring the invitation. Finally, he thanked the partners; UNICEF and SOML for providing the funding support for the workshop and all other partners present for their contributions and commitment towards perfecting the plan.
